Buying crypto on Andros, from Fresh Creek to Kemp’s Bay

Andros is the largest Bahamian island, yet only about 7,695 people live here, spread from Nicholls Town and Morgan’s Bluff in the north, through Fresh Creek and Mangrove Cay, to Kemp’s Bay in the south. Banking has shrunk to a few part-time branches and a handful of ATMs. There is no crypto ATM, no crypto shop and no Bitcoin merchant on any map. So this guide is mobile-first: routes that work from a phone, and habits that keep you safe when power or signal fails.

An island Nassau depends on

Andros keeps the capital running. About 19 million litres of fresh water a day are barged to Nassau from Morgan’s Bluff. The US Navy’s Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) sits at Fresh Creek, and together with the government it is one of the island’s biggest employers. Tourism is the largest industry, built on bonefishing, roughly 178 inland blue holes, Small Hope Bay Lodge and the Androsia batik works founded at Fresh Creek in 1972.

Bank access, district by district

RBC closed its Andros Town branch on 30 March 2018. The Tribune reported that North Andros residents then faced a 45 to 60 minute drive to the nearest bank, and that web shops filled part of the gap. In April 2025 Bank of The Bahamas announced that Kemp’s Bay would open only on Wednesdays from 5 May, a move a minister called a “path of neglect”.

The Central Bank worked Andros hard in 2023: a business outlook presentation on 15 June, Sand DollarSand Dollar The Central Bank’s digital version of the Bahamian dollar, launched in October 2020. It is not a cryptocurrency and cannot be swapped for crypto directly. Its July update named Pine Island Resort in North Andros and Chrispin’s General Store and Smith’s Water Depot in Central Andros as merchants. Mobile-first routes that work from Andros

The banks with a footprint on Andros are Bank of The Bahamas and Commonwealth. Under the Central Bank’s December 2025 fee schedule, a BOB debit card costs 1.25% on approved foreign transactions and Commonwealth 1.50% plus VAT, with 1.5% stamp dutyStamp duty (FX) A 1.5% government tax on converting Bahamian dollars into foreign currency, charged by your bank. Power and signal resilience

Plan for days when the power is off or the signal is weak. Use an authenticator app for login codes; unlike SMS, it works with no signal. Write down your exchange’s backup codes.
