Eleuthera is about 180 km long, and its money infrastructure is spread thinly along that length: a CIBC branch in Governor’s Harbour, a Commonwealth branch in Spanish Wells, an RBC branch on Harbour Island whose current status we could not confirm, and Bank of The Bahamas sites that the bank itself calls unprofitable. There is no crypto ATM and no Bitcoin-accepting business on any map we checked. What Eleuthera does have is an unusually well-documented set of Sand Dollar The Central Bank’s digital version of the Bahamian dollar, launched in October 2020. It is not a cryptocurrency and cannot be swapped for crypto directly. Glossary merchants. Together, those facts decide the best crypto routes here.

In April 2024 Bank of The Bahamas’ managing director said none of its Family Island branches is profitable and that the bank stays at the government’s request; the same report described long lines when the south Eleuthera ATM went offline.

What your bank charges for a crypto purchase
On Eleuthera, your bank decides your cheapest route more than any exchange does. Under the Central Bank’s December 2025 fee schedule, a CIBC debit card lists no fee on approved foreign transactions, which makes Governor’s Harbour’s CIBC customers the best placed for card purchases. Commonwealth charges 1.50% plus VAT, Bank of The Bahamas 1.25%, and RBC 2.50%. Every route also carries 1.5% Stamp duty (FX) A 1.5% government tax on converting Bahamian dollars into foreign currency, charged by your bank. Glossary, because buying crypto means converting Bahamian dollars into foreign currency under Exchange control Central Bank rules on residents moving Bahamian dollars into foreign currency or foreign assets. Crypto is treated as a foreign asset. Glossary.
For larger amounts a USD wire is cheaper in percentage terms. CIBC lists outgoing wires from B$14.25 to B$137.50, Commonwealth from B$68.75 to B$100.38 and Bank of The Bahamas a flat B$22. Our card guide explains why Bahamian cards get declined, and Bahamian banks and crypto compares wires in full.

Eleuthera’s Sand Dollar head start
The Central Bank visited Eleuthera from 18 to 21 July 2023, and the Eleuthera Chamber of Commerce hosted a Digital Currency Expo on 20 July. Its August 2023 update named Highway Service Station in Governor’s Harbour and Joey’s Liquors and Rock Sound Liquors in Rock Sound as Sand Dollar merchants. With the Expo, that makes Eleuthera one of the best-documented Family Islands for Sand Dollar. There is still no official island merchant list, so ask at the till.
Sand Dollar is not crypto and cannot buy Bitcoin directly. It matters here as everyday backup money: a Tier II wallet holds up to B$8,000, links to your bank account and carries no transaction fees for individuals. Island Pay named Eleuthera in its 2025 plan for Family Island kiosks and ATMs; we could not confirm any installations. Read Sand Dollar and crypto for the indirect routes.
Second homes, Harbour Island and cruise visitors
Harbour Island, reached by water taxi from North Eleuthera airport, is a high-end second-home market. On census day in 2022, New Providence, Grand Bahama and Eleuthera together held 62.6% of the country’s 24,990 vacant dwellings. Vacancy is not the same as second homes, but it signals how many part-time residents the island has. Most bank abroad, and their home exchange accounts work as usual on a Bahamian phone signal. If you become a Bahamian resident, exchange control starts to apply, so talk to your bank first.
Disney’s Lighthouse Point opened to cruise guests in south Eleuthera in June 2024. Visitors should bring cards and cash rather than plan to spend crypto: BTC Map lists no Bitcoin merchants anywhere in The Bahamas. Our guide to paying with crypto covers the workarounds.
Step plan for Eleuthera

Set up Sand Dollar as daily backup
A Tier II wallet linked to your bank account keeps you spending when an ATM is offline.
- 03
Verify an exchange account and test your card
Upload ID on good Wi-Fi, then buy B$20 to B$50 to confirm the card is accepted.
- 04
Store long-term coins yourself
Keep the seed phrase backup away from the shoreline and off your phone. Our wallet guide covers hurricane-proof storage.
- 05
Cash out into the bank you can reach
Sell to a card or wire US dollars back. CIBC lists B$12.38 to B$33 on incoming wires. See how to sell crypto.
Bahamas Ferries has offices in Harbour Island, Spanish Wells, Governor’s Harbour and Rock Sound, so a day in Nassau is an easy way to reach its denser bank network. Our Nassau guide covers that, and the island guide compares Eleuthera with the rest of the country.
