West End sits at the western tip of Grand Bahama, 56 nautical miles from Palm Beach, which makes it the first Bahamian landfall for many boats crossing the Gulf Stream. It was a rum-running port during Prohibition, and today it lives on fishing and tourism. The old Jack Tar marina and resort reopened in 2001 as Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour, and the small West End Airport mostly sees private aircraft. It has no bank branch, no crypto ATM and no business we could find that takes Bitcoin. This page is for boaters arriving with crypto and US cards, and for the people who live here.

What West End has, and what it lacks

Neither CIBC nor Commonwealth lists a West End branch or ATM. Bank of The Bahamas closed its branch at Eight Mile Rock at the end of 2017. The nearest full branches are in Freeport: CIBC on Pioneers Way, Commonwealth and RBC on East Mall Drive, and Commonwealth again at the Lucaya Shopping Centre. We could not verify any cash machine in West End, so plan as if there is none.

On the crypto side the answer is short. Coin ATM Radar has never listed a machine on Grand Bahama, BTC Map shows no Bitcoin-accepting business on the island, and no firm on the SCB The Securities Commission of The Bahamas, the regulator that registers and supervises crypto businesses under the DARE Act. Glossary register gives a Grand Bahama address. Island banking is detailed in our Freeport guide.

Arriving by boat with crypto and a US card

If you are a visiting boater, the Bahamian rules that frustrate residents mostly do not apply to you. Exchange control Central Bank rules on residents moving Bahamian dollars into foreign currency or foreign assets. Crypto is treated as a foreign asset. Glossary and the 1.5% Stamp duty (FX) A 1.5% government tax on converting Bahamian dollars into foreign currency, charged by your bank. Glossary attach to Bahamian residents converting Bahamian dollars. Your US exchange account and cards work as at home, and US notes are accepted one for one with Bahamian dollars.

The practical risk is access. Exchanges often flag a login from a new country and send a code by email or text, which may never arrive without roaming. Before you leave the dock, log in once, switch to an authenticator-app 2FA Two-factor authentication: a second code, ideally from an app like Google Authenticator rather than SMS, needed to log in or withdraw. Glossary (it works offline) and save backup codes off the phone.

How much cash to carry

Carry enough cash for fuel and food until you reach Freeport. There, CIBC has remote tellers at Grand Bahama International Airport and Port Lucaya, and Commonwealth has an ATM at Cost Right in Freeport. The United States requires travellers to declare more than US$10,000, and The Bahamas has its own currency declaration rules, so confirm the current threshold with Bahamas Customs before you sail.

For people who live in West End

For residents, every banking errand means the drive to Freeport, so phone-based routes matter more here than anywhere else on Grand Bahama: a debit card from your Freeport bank, an exchange app and ID checks done online. On the Central Bank’s December 2025 fee schedule CIBC lists no foreign debit-card charge, while RBC lists 2.50% and Commonwealth 1.50% plus VAT. Wires suit bigger sums, though your bank may ask about exchange control. Our card guide and banks guide cover both.

A Sand Dollar The Central Bank’s digital version of the Bahamian dollar, launched in October 2020. It is not a cryptocurrency and cannot be swapped for crypto directly. Glossary wallet from a provider such as Kanoo, founded in Freeport, is useful for paying people locally but cannot buy crypto directly. And because West End is a waterfront settlement, keep your Seed phrase A list of 12 or 24 words that can restore your wallet on any device. Whoever has these words owns the coins, so never type them into a website. Glossary backup somewhere a storm surge cannot reach; our wallet guide shows how.

Florida options

Back in Palm Beach, or on a Florida trip, US Bitcoin ATMs are common in shops and petrol stations, but priced with a Markup Extra percentage a seller adds on top of the market price. Bitcoin ATMs and P2P sellers often charge markups. Glossary over the market rate. Ferries do not call at West End; Baleària sails to Fort Lauderdale from Freeport. Our Bitcoin ATM page compares machines with online buying.
