Grand Bahama has lost people, taken Hurricane Dorian’s surge and fought in arbitration over the agreement that created Freeport. For crypto buyers the picture is simpler than the politics: real bank branches in town, no crypto infrastructure on the ground, and Florida a ferry ride away.

A free-trade city that has been shrinking
Grand Bahama counted 46,740 people in 2022, 4,628 fewer than in 2010, by far the largest fall of any island. Household size dropped from 3.4 to 2.6. Just 5,884 live in the West Grand Bahama district towards West End; the rest cluster around Freeport, Lucaya and the east.
The city exists because of the Hawksbill Creek Agreement of August 1955, which granted Wallace Groves an initial 50,000 acres, later expanded to 138,000, and handed the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) control of a free-trade zone. Its customs and excise concessions now run to 2054. In a Partial Final Award dated 27 February 2026, an arbitral tribunal ruled on the government’s claims against the GBPA. The government says it confirms the GBPA must keep making annual payments until 2054; the GBPA calls it a “landmark victory” and says the government breached the agreement. The US$357 million claim remains disputed.
Banks in Freeport and Lucaya
Grand Bahama and the Family Islands went from 38 bank branches in 2014 to 23 in 2021, but Freeport kept a working core. Bank of The Bahamas closed its Eight Mile Rock branch at the end of 2017, pushing more customers into town.
| Bank | Where on Grand Bahama | Foreign debit-card fee |
|---|---|---|
| CIBC Caribbean | Pioneers Way branch; remote tellers at the airport, Port Lucaya, two Solomon’s, RAND Hospital, Municipal Motors | Free |
| Commonwealth | East Mall Drive and Lucaya Shopping Centre branches; Cost Right ATM | 1.50% + VAT |
| RBC | East Mall Drive and Explorer’s Way, renovated after Dorian (2020) | 2.50% |
| Scotiabank, BOB | Freeport branches listed in the past; current status unconfirmed | No charge listed / 1.25% |
For a Freeport resident the cheapest card on that schedule is a CIBC debit card, with no foreign transaction fee listed. For anything above roughly B$2,000, a SWIFT wire usually costs less as a share of the amount. Our banks and crypto guide compares wire fees, and the card guide explains how to stop a crypto purchase being declined.
Kanoo, the tech-hub push and Sand Dollar
Freeport has tried to sell itself as a technology hub. The Grand Bahama Tech Summit at the Grand Lucayan in November 2017 drew more than 500 attendees and the Commercial Enterprises Act 2017 offered incentives for software and data storage firms. A second summit followed; we found none from 2024 to 2026.
The most visible survivor is Kanoo, a payments company founded in Freeport in 2018. Kanoo is a Central Bank-approved AFI Authorised Financial Institution: a company the Central Bank approves to offer Sand Dollar wallets, such as SunCash, Island Pay or Kanoo. Glossary for Sand Dollar The Central Bank’s digital version of the Bahamian dollar, launched in October 2020. It is not a cryptocurrency and cannot be swapped for crypto directly. Glossary wallets. It does not sell crypto: its chairman has said crypto payments were possible but not activated pending Central Bank approval, and “Top-Up with BTC” on its site means phone credit from the Bahamas Telecommunications Company.
Sand Dollar does have a Freeport footprint. Central Bank updates in 2023 named Go-Gettas Ltd. and Sawyer’s Fresh Market as merchants, and a rebate campaign ran at Sawyer’s and RayVin Mall in August 2023. There is no direct swap to crypto; see our Sand Dollar guide.
After Dorian: keep your keys off the island
Hurricane Dorian stalled over Grand Bahama in September 2019 with a 12 to 18 foot surge. Eight people died on the island, nearly half of homes were damaged and the airport was left a debris field. The Inter-American Development Bank put national damage at US$2.5 billion, most of it in Abaco and Grand Bahama. A storm can take your phone and its paper backup together, so store your Seed phrase A list of 12 or 24 words that can restore your wallet on any device. Whoever has these words owns the coins, so never type them into a website. Celebration Key and visitors
Carnival opened Celebration Key on Grand Bahama’s south coast on 19 July 2025, the first phase of a US$600 million project that expects more than two million visitors a year. It is exclusive to Carnival guests, with the Lokono Cove village for Bahamian vendors. Visitors should pay in cash or by card: BTC Map shows no Grand Bahama business accepting Bitcoin.
The Florida option
Freeport’s great advantage is the sea route. Baleària runs from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale to Freeport, with a crossing of about 3 hours 46 minutes according to ferry aggregators; check the operator’s current schedule. South Florida has plenty of Bitcoin ATMs in shops and petrol stations, so a resident already making the trip can buy there with US dollars. Machine prices include a Markup Extra percentage a seller adds on top of the market price. Bitcoin ATMs and P2P sellers often charge markups. Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy Bitcoin in Freeport?
Online. There is no crypto ATM, crypto shop or exchange office in Freeport or Lucaya, and none has ever been listed on Grand Bahama. Residents buy on an exchange app with a debit card from a Freeport bank, or wire US dollars for larger amounts.
Is there a Bitcoin ATM on Grand Bahama?
No. Coin ATM Radar’s records back to 2019 show machines only in Nassau, and none anywhere in The Bahamas today. The nearest are in South Florida.
Does Kanoo let you buy Bitcoin?
No. Kanoo, founded in Freeport in 2018, is a Sand Dollar wallet and payments app. Its “Top-Up with BTC” option buys Bahamas Telecommunications Company airtime, not Bitcoin, and its chairman has said crypto payments are not activated.
Does the free-trade zone change crypto rules in Freeport?
Not for individuals. The Hawksbill Creek Agreement gives licensed businesses customs and excise concessions, but residents’ bank accounts still fall under Central Bank exchange control, and the 1.5% stamp duty on converting B$ to foreign currency applies as in Nassau.
