The picture of sipping a Bahama Mama on Cable Beach and paying in Bitcoin is a popular one. The reality in October 2026 is plainer: you will struggle to find a single Bahamian business that publicly accepts crypto. This page sets out what the data shows, where digital payments really happen here, and how to spend crypto anyway.

Where crypto is accepted today

BTC Map is the main crowd-sourced map of businesses that take Bitcoin, including Lightning Network A layer on top of Bitcoin for near-instant, very cheap payments, often a fraction of a cent. Glossary payments. It has a page for The Bahamas describing Nassau’s small but internationally minded Bitcoin community, yet when we queried its database on 22 October 2026, including deleted entries, there were no places inside the country. A search centred on the islands returns plenty of merchants in Miami and none here.

That doesn’t prove nobody in Nassau will take Bitcoin. A bar owner or tour operator may accept it informally from a friend. But there is no public list you can rely on, and we will not name merchants we cannot verify. If you run a business that accepts crypto, email us and we will check and add you. There is also no crypto ATM to fall back on; see our Bitcoin ATM status page.

Sand Dollar: where digital payments actually happen

The digital money Bahamian shops do take is Sand Dollar The Central Bank’s digital version of the Bahamian dollar, launched in October 2020. It is not a cryptocurrency and cannot be swapped for crypto directly. Glossary, the Central Bank’s digital B$. By the end of 2024 there were 2,034 merchant wallets, up from 1,608 in mid-2023. Central Bank updates from 2023 name examples across the islands: rebate campaigns at Super Value and at Solomon’s, Sawyer’s Fresh Market in Freeport, Highway Service Station in Governor’s Harbour and Pine Island Resort in North Andros, plus regattas on Long Island and in Exuma. Our Eleuthera guide has more Family Island examples.

Sand Dollar is not crypto and cannot be bought with crypto, so it does not solve the problem of spending Bitcoin. Our Sand Dollar guide explains why.

Hotels and resorts

We looked for Bahamian hotels and resorts that publicly accept crypto for rooms or bills and found none, from Paradise Island to the Family Islands. A property might still agree on request. If one does, get the price fixed in US dollars, ask which processor is used and keep the confirmation. Assume your card is the payment method at check-in.

Real estate: lessons from the FTX era

The best-known “crypto money in Bahamian property” story is FTX. According to filings reported by Reuters in November 2022, FTX Property Holdings bought about 15 properties worth roughly US$100 million in 2021–22, including a US$30 million penthouse and seven condos for about US$72 million at the Albany resort community in south-western New Providence. Those purchases used money from a crypto company; we found no public record that sellers were paid in crypto. Our FTX timeline covers what happened to them.

Today we found no verified listing that accepts crypto directly. The workable route is to sell crypto, wire US dollars to your Bahamian attorney’s client account, and document your Source of funds Proof of where your money came from, such as a payslip, sale agreement or bank statement. Often asked for larger deposits or cash-outs. Glossary with exchange statements and purchase records. Expect the usual costs, including VAT, which Deloitte lists at 2.5% on real property up to B$100,000 and 10% above. For six-figure conversions, an OTC desk can reduce Slippage When your order fills at a worse price than you saw on screen, because the price moved or there were not enough sellers at that price. Glossary.

Yacht charters and boating

The Bahamas is a boating destination, from the marinas of Bimini to West End on Grand Bahama. We have not verified any charter operator in Bahamian waters that accepts crypto, so treat it as a case-by-case negotiation. If you go ahead, deal with an established broker and a written charter agreement, fix the price and refund terms in US dollars rather than coins, and avoid paying a private individual’s wallet upfront.

Spend crypto the practical way

Electricity, water, rent and school fees cannot be paid in crypto. The route that works is an Off-ramp Any route that turns crypto back into regular money in your bank account or hand. Glossary: sell on an exchange, withdraw to your own debit card or wire US dollars to your Bahamian bank, then pay as usual. Incoming US dollars carry no stamp duty, and card payouts are usually fastest. Our cash-out guide compares the routes, and crypto debit cards explains why few card programmes confirm Bahamas eligibility.

Phone credit is the one bill you can pay with crypto directly. Bitrefill sells BTC top-ups from B$1 to B$100, Aliv top-ups from B$1 to B$50 and a Bahamas eSIM. Don’t confuse this with Kanoo’s “Top-Up with BTC” button, which means Bahamas Telecommunications Company airtime paid in dollars.

Tips for visitors

If you are flying into Nassau or arriving by cruise ship, leave the crypto at home as a payment method. Bring a debit or credit card and some cash: US dollars circulate freely alongside the Bahamian dollar at par. Visitors can open a basic Sand Dollar wallet without ID, but balances can only be spent here. Our Nassau guide covers banks and cash in town.

VAT and tax when you pay with crypto

Paying with crypto does not change the tax on what you buy. VAT applies at the standard 10% rate, charged by registered businesses. Whether fees on crypto services attract VAT has not been clarified publicly. The Bahamas has no capital gains tax, but US citizens living here should remember that spending crypto is treated as selling it under US rules; see our Bahamas crypto tax guide.
