Most exchanges used in The Bahamas are regulated somewhere else. Uphold is an exception. Customers outside the US, UK and Europe sign with Uphold Worldwide Ltd., a company registered in Nassau and listed on the Securities Commission’s DARE register. Your agreement is governed by Bahamian law and disputes go to Bahamian courts, which almost no other large platform offers residents.

Uphold Worldwide on the SCB register
The SCB The Securities Commission of The Bahamas, the regulator that registers and supervises crypto businesses under the DARE Act. Glossary register (30 September 2026) lists Uphold Worldwide as both a digital asset exchange and a digital asset business. Its approved activities are operating an exchange, fiat-to-crypto and crypto-to-crypto exchange, payment services, transfers, Custodial Someone else, usually an exchange, holds the keys for you. Easy, but you rely on that company staying solvent and honest. Glossary and Staking Locking up certain coins to help secure a blockchain in exchange for a yield. DARE-registered staking providers must warn clients about the risks in writing. Glossary. Only nine of the 35 registrants hold the exchange type, and only five are approved for staking. The register gives Aristo House on Sanford Drive as the address but does not yet list a website for the entity.
What SCB registration means for you
Registration under the DARE Act The Digital Assets and Registered Exchanges Act 2024, the Bahamian law that requires crypto businesses operating in or from The Bahamas to register with the Securities Commission. Glossary 2024 brings concrete duties. Client assets must be kept separate from Uphold’s own, both on-chain and in its records. Staking providers must warn clients about the risks, including that rewards may create tax liabilities abroad. The SCB examines registrants for anti-money-laundering and Travel Rule A rule that makes crypto firms pass sender and recipient details along with transfers. The SCB set a USD/EUR 1,000 threshold in August 2026. Glossary compliance: transfers of US$1,000 or more carry full sender details, and withdrawals to a private wallet can be screened at any value, so expect questions about your own wallet address.
It is not a guarantee. The Act has no separate retail-investor category, and registration does not make crypto prices any less volatile. But you can verify the firm yourself on the register, and the Commission (242-397-4100, info@scb.gov.bs) supervises it. See how other firms compare on our SCB register guide.
How Uphold prices trades
Uphold charges a Spread The gap between the price you can buy at and the price you can sell at. A hidden cost that is not shown as a fee. Glossary rather than a visible commission: the price on the Preview Trade screen already includes its margin. That price is held for 18 seconds, and the app warns you when market spreads exceed 4%. Uphold publishes typical spreads only for the US, UK and Europe and says other regions may differ, so treat the table as a guide.
| Asset type | Published typical spread |
|---|---|
| USD to supported USD stablecoins | 0%, first US$20,000 a month, within 0.2% of US$1 |
| Other stablecoins | Under 0.25% |
| Bitcoin and Ether | 2.05%–2.2% |
| Altcoins | 2.85%–3.8% |
| Precious metals | 2.35%–3.40% |
On B$1,000 of Bitcoin, a 2.1% spread costs about B$21 before bank fees. That is more than an order-book exchange, but there is no fee schedule to decode. If you trade between two asset types, the higher rate applies, so swapping an altcoin for Bitcoin costs the altcoin rate.
Funding and withdrawals
The user agreement (20 August 2026) allows bank accounts, debit and credit cards and other methods, some through third-party partners, plus crypto deposits above minimum thresholds. Any funding or withdrawal fee is shown before you confirm. Uphold does not publish a Bahamas-specific method list, so check in the app whether your card or a USD wire is offered. If your card is declined, see our card guide. For selling, compare routes in our cash-out guide.
