Islands guide

Buying crypto across The Bahamas, island by island

The rules are the same on every island. Banks, cash and phone signal are not. Pick your island to see what is really on the ground.

New Providence holds about three quarters of the 398,165 people counted in the 2022 census and nearly all the bank branches. On Bimini, Long Island or Inagua the nearest teller can be a flight away. Each island guide is built around what actually exists there, and says so plainly when the answer is “nothing”.

How the islands compare

Bank presence comes from CIBC and Commonwealth locators plus dated news reports; Bank of The Bahamas, RBC and Scotiabank publish no complete list we could check.

New Providence and the Family Islands buy differently

The purchase itself is identical everywhere. You open an exchange account, pass the KYC “Know your customer”: the ID checks (passport or driver’s licence, a selfie, proof of address) that regulated platforms must run before you can trade. Glossary check with a passport or driver’s licence, and pay with a Bahamian debit card or a USD wire. Exchange control Central Bank rules on residents moving Bahamian dollars into foreign currency or foreign assets. Crypto is treated as a foreign asset. Glossary and the 1.5% Stamp duty (FX) A 1.5% government tax on converting Bahamian dollars into foreign currency, charged by your bank. Glossary apply the same way in Matthew Town as in Cable Beach. What changes is everything around that purchase.

In Nassau, if your card is declined you can walk into a branch that afternoon, and six banks compete for your account. Branches nationally fell from 86 in 2014 to 61 in 2021, but Grand Bahama and the Family Islands took the heavier cut, from 38 to 23. Bank of The Bahamas’ managing director has said none of its Family Island branches is profitable. On those islands a replacement card can take days, a wire may mean a flight, and cash runs short when the one ATM goes down, as happened in south Eleuthera in 2024.

That shifts the priorities. Family Island buyers should keep two working cards if they can, set up online banking before they need it, and treat phone signal as part of the plan: test whether verification codes arrive before relying on them. On smaller islands a lost phone is also harder to replace, so storm-proof wallet backups deserve more attention than which coin to buy.

Frequently asked questions

Which Bahamian island has a Bitcoin ATM?

None, as of October 2026. The only machines ever listed were four in Nassau and Paradise Island in 2021, and all have been delisted. Every island uses the same online routes instead.

Can I buy crypto on a Family Island with no bank branch?

Yes, if you have a debit card from any Bahamian bank and a phone signal. Identity checks and card purchases happen entirely online. Replacing a lost card and sending wires are the harder parts.

Which island is closest to Florida’s Bitcoin ATMs?

Bimini, about 50 miles from Miami and roughly two hours by fast ferry from Fort Lauderdale, then West End, 56 nautical miles from Palm Beach. Freeport has a ferry to Fort Lauderdale of about 3 hours 46 minutes.

Do crypto rules differ from island to island?

No. The DARE Act, exchange control and the 1.5% stamp duty apply nationwide. What differs is access: banks, cash and connectivity.
