Abaco is a chain of boating towns and cays: Marsh Harbour as the commercial hub, Hope Town on Elbow Cay with its red-and-white lighthouse, Treasure Cay’s big marina, and Man-O-War’s boatbuilding tradition. About 300,000 visitors came in 2019. Then, on 1 September 2019, Hurricane Dorian made landfall on Elbow Cay at 185 mph and moved on to Marsh Harbour. Everything about money on Abaco, crypto included, has to be read through that storm and the bank closures before it.

What Dorian changed
The Inter-American Development Bank put Dorian’s total cost to The Bahamas at US$3.4 billion: US$2.5 billion in damage plus US$717 million in losses. Abaco took 87% of the damage, with the rest on Grand Bahama. Around 75% of homes on Abaco were damaged or destroyed, and Marsh Harbour’s buildings were severely hit. As of 18 October 2019 there were 67 confirmed deaths and 282 people missing nationally.
Abaco’s population was 16,695 at the 2022 census, only 529 below 2010. North Abaco counted 10,172 and South Abaco 6,523. But the storm destroyed homes and, with them, any savings kept in cash, on paper or on a single phone. That is why storage matters more on this page than buying.
Banking: everything runs through Marsh Harbour
Abaco’s banks were pulling back before Dorian. Scotiabank folded its Cooper’s Town branch into Marsh Harbour in 2015. In 2017 CIBC closed Hope Town, Man-O-War and Green Turtle Cay, and RBC merged Treasure Cay into Marsh Harbour on 7 April. In late 2020 Scotiabank announced it would consolidate its Abaco operations into New Providence branches.

Commonwealth Bank rebuilt its Marsh Harbour branch as a new facility of about 9,000 square feet, running a temporary sub-branch at Maxwell’s Supermarket in the meantime. RBC began a new Marsh Harbour branch in late 2020, targeting early 2021; we could not confirm its opening. For a crypto buyer the key number is your card fee. On the Central Bank’s December 2025 schedule CIBC lists no charge on approved foreign debit-card transactions and Commonwealth lists 1.50% plus VAT. The 1.5% Stamp duty (FX) A 1.5% government tax on converting Bahamian dollars into foreign currency, charged by your bank. Glossary applies on top, and Exchange control Central Bank rules on residents moving Bahamian dollars into foreign currency or foreign assets. Crypto is treated as a foreign asset. Glossary applies to residents. Our banks guide and card guide go deeper.
Sand Dollar’s planned second island
When the Central Bank launched its Sand Dollar The Central Bank’s digital version of the Bahamian dollar, launched in October 2020. It is not a cryptocurrency and cannot be swapped for crypto directly. Glossary pilot in Exuma in December 2019, Abaco was named as the next island, for the first half of 2020. After Dorian, the Central Bank explored introducing it early on Abaco to help retail recovery, and a Commonwealth Bank manager said it would be offered to Abaco clients. Sand Dollar went nationwide in October 2020, and the Central Bank held Family Island engagement sessions on Abaco on 18–22 September 2023. We found no named Abaco merchants in its updates.
Hurricane-proof crypto storage
Coins sit on the blockchain, not in your house, so a storm cannot destroy them. What it can destroy is your access. If your only copy of the Seed phrase A list of 12 or 24 words that can restore your wallet on any device. Whoever has these words owns the coins, so never type them into a website. Glossary is a paper card in a drawer, and your only login device is your phone, one surge takes both.
- Back up on something durable. A stamped metal plate survives water that destroys paper.
- Keep two copies apart, one of them off Abaco with family in Nassau, Florida or elsewhere.
- Use a Hardware wallet A small USB or Bluetooth device that stores your keys offline and signs transactions without exposing them. Glossary for savings, packed in a waterproof bag with your evacuation documents.
- Protect your exchange login. Use an email you can reach from any device and print your 2FA backup codes.
Our wallet guide covers devices, shipping and customs duty.

Life on the cays: boats, mobile and timing
On Elbow Cay, Hope Town’s centre is car-restricted and goods arrive by weekly barge. Treasure Cay is built around its marina and condos. For residents of the cays, a bank visit means a water taxi to Marsh Harbour, which is why online routes make sense here: a card purchase takes minutes from a phone. Island-by-island mobile coverage is not published, so outer-cay residents should test their signal before relying on a two-factor code. Starlink has held a Bahamian licence for fixed broadband since February 2023. Cashing out works in reverse: sell on the exchange and wire US dollars to your Marsh Harbour account (see our selling guide). With no crypto ATM on any island, the Bitcoin ATM page explains the alternatives.
